Artist’s Statement
“This is Fifty” – For John – Poem by Rina Lucas, Staff & Palette
I remember your face
The boyish good looks
Of a youth barely twenty
Confidence in his gaze
But shyness in his smile
How I fell for those eyes
Inviting me in
Asking me to stay
Forever
And I did,
I know your face
Only more handsome
As wisdom and time
Have traversed its features
From edge to edge
Confidence remains
Strengthened by achieving
Everything
You have ever set out to do
And then some,
I love this face
With everything that I am
And truly there is no tribute
Splendid enough
To extol all that you are
My trembling heart and hands
Are not worthy
Yet the inspiration
Of you
Bids me to humbly try
Honoring you
With my every effort
To celebrate
Your grand impact
On this planet
On your patients and students
On our lives
And on our love,
I am so glad
That during the darkest
Coldest
Time of year
You graced this world
With your warm brilliance
A light was born
Fifty years ago
Today
And it refuses to dim
It keeps burning brighter
This is Fifty
And it’s ablaze
With abundant possibilities.

With much gratitude to the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley and collaborators at the Blacksburg Regional Art Association, the Floyd Center for the Arts, and Radford University, Rina Lucas of Staff & Palette is delighted to have her 36 x 48 original oil with accompanying poetry, “Seasonal Serendipity” invited to exhibit in the 16th New River Art Biennial Exhibition 2021. This year’s event is being hosted at the Radford University Art Museum on Tyler. The gallery is located near the campus of Radford University at 214 Tyler Avenue, Radford, VA 24141. The Tyler Gallery desk (staffed by student workers) can be reached at 540-831-5160.

The exhibit opens on Saturday, October 23, with an opening reception from 5 – 7 p.m. featuring a talk at approximately 6 p.m. by juror Mary Holland, the Thomas C. Gordon, Jr., Director of the Studio School at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia.
“Seasonal Serendipity” – 36 x 48 original oil on gallery wrapped canvas inspired by a ride along Easter Creek Road in Floyd County, Virginia with Rina’s husband John and their Pups Ariel and Eli in the side by side. During the many hours of painting required for this piece, original piano compositions by Rina’s friend and colleague Arshak Sirunyan from his album “Serendipity” were playing on a loop in the studio, hence the title chosen with Maestro’s permission.
“Seasonal Serendipity” – Poem by Rina Lucas, Staff & Palette
Autumn had her way
Along Easter Creek Road
High in the hills
On Virginia’s breezy back porch,
How serendipitous
We were there to witness
A glorious glimpse
Of her transformative techniques
To the woods we know so well,
Every season holds her charms
But the blushing beauty
Of October’s angel
Is unsurpassed,
She knows how to vogue
For the camera and the canvas
With impeccable aplomb,
Lighting her limbs
Amid amber ambiance,
Letting go
In a mesmerizing melody
Of what no longer serves her well
And relishing the regality
Change brings to her chambers.

“Side by Side Swagger” – an original oil portrait of the artist with her pups Ariel and Eli chauffeured on a side by side ride through the mountains by her husband John for whom this piece is a birthday gift – November 26th, 2020. For the many hours required to complete this painting, original saxophone compositions by friend and colleague Robert Lewis from his brilliant album “Swagger” were playing on a loop in the studio, hence the title of the piece with Maestro’s permission.

“Side by Side Swagger” – a poem by Rina Lucas to accompany this piece – For John

Such a feast
You provide
For this artist’s eyes
As we roll through
Visions
Of what will be
On my canvas,
All that I need
In life
Is on this ride
Where gratitude grows
Alive with songs
That can be seen,
Poetry
That can be painted,
The person
In whom my heart delights,
And our little loves
Whose light and laughter
Resonate
Through this rich, rocky realm
Along the ridge.

“Becoming” – Poem by Rina Lucas

So much of who we are
Is acquired
Along each experience
Exuding evidence
Of who we have always been
And dare to become,
Building big dreams
On small steps
Unfolding
From foundational faith
That we are…
And we are enough,
In this moment
Of precise perfection
There is not one more thing
We must do
To be
Who we are,
We just are
And what we are is enough,
As our bodies grow and change
As our essence evolves with age
As we struggle against the barriers
That keep us tightly folded within ourselves
In this stillness
Still
We are enough,
One day those dark walls of our own creation
Walls to protect
Walls to allow
Walls to accept
Walls to prepare
Walls to fight against so we can be stronger
Will burst,
Suddenly
We will know who we are
And who we have been all along,
In the quiet of the chrysalis
We begin to remember ourselves anew
And it gives us courage to break free,
We have always been strong
We have always been beautiful
We have always been brave
We have always been worthy of wings
To soar
On songs of hope
Becoming
Who we have always been
And always were meant to be.

“Mr. Elijah’s Masterpiece” – Poem by Rina Lucas

He stands
Greeting us with a warm smile
That has welcomed us for years
To his basket stand
The gem of Highway 17
Showcasing the talents
Handed down to him from his mother
And a thousand generations before her
All around us
Sparkling in the Charleston sun
Are his masterpieces
Fragrant as the morning dew
The poetry and pain
Of a great people
Sewn together in prayer
If ever a man looked like God to me
It’s Mr. Elijah
Gentleness and strength
Humility and greatness
Swirled together like his artwork
With serene confidence
His kind eyes have seen so much
Joy and grief
For more than 80 years
His skilled hands have been
Working the Sweetgrass
Translating torment and toil
Into a glorious triumph
Ashes into Beauty
Mourning into Dancing.
